Unlike in years past, this year there will be no magic in the playoffs for the Timbers as they fall in the first round to RSL, 2-1.

Portland beat Salt Lake twice during the regular season, but came out flat with everything on the line Saturday night. The Timbers controlled just 37.4 percent of possession and were outshot 9-0 in the first half Saturday.

Real Salt Lake struck first in the 28th minute when Baird sent a cross into the box for Damir Kreilach,  who ran behind three Timbers’ defenders before heading in the opening goal of the night.

The Timbers were able to respond immediately in the 2nd half when Dairon Asprilla headed in a corner kick from Sebastian Blanco. But it wasn’t enough as Real Salt Lake took the lead when Jefferson Savarino scored a goal in the 87th minute.

Salt Lake will now advance to the Western Conference semifinals to play the second-place Seattle Sounders on Wednesday, Oct. 23, while the Timbers will head into a long offseason.
