Before the game, Friday night looked like the M’s would win easily. Here’s why:

  • Hottest pitcher on the team (Mike Leake, who pitched into the 7th inning or later the last five games) versus a “Bullpen Day” for the Orioles.
  • Baltimore’s relief pitching is the second worst in the majors: 6.10 ERA.

In typical fashion, the Mariners struggled early. They fell behind 3-0, but eventually took a 10-3 lead in the 5th.

Baltimore may have a bad bullpen, but the M’s aren’t much better and sit 5th worst (5.22 ERA). The M’s tried to give away their 6-run lead.

In the end, Roenis Elías came in to close the game, and didn’t give up a base runner. Phew!

Against the Orioles or not, the offense was impressive at the top of the order.

Mallex Smith reached 5 times, with a final line of 3-3, 4 Runs, 2 BB, 1 RBI. J.P. Crawford was nice as well: 3-4, 1 Run, 1 BB, 2 RBI.

If you add Domingo Santana, who batted third, the top 3 of the M’s order went a combined 7-10, 5 BB, 5 Runs, 5 RBI.

Winning Pitcher, (7-6) Mike Leake: 5.1 IP, 7 ER, 2 K, 0 BB

Losing Pitcher, (0-1) Sean Gilmartin: 2.1 IP, 5 ER, 1 K, 2 BB

Save (9), Roenis Elías: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB
