Saturday’s loss to Houston marked the first series loss for Seattle this year. The Mariners were hoping to get one game from the Astros on this home-stand. Houston was just better on Sunday, despite the early Mariner 2-0 lead. Marco Gonzales was strong in the first five innings. However, the Astros made the M’s pay in the sixth and seventh innings, and that was all the offense they would need. Here’s how it happened…

Marco Gonzales kept Houston quiet in the first inning, and then Mitch Haniger gave Seattle the lead in the home half with a lead-off home run. 1-0 M’s.

Neither the Mariners nor the Astros could score in the second inning. It looked like the same would happen in the third, but Haniger wouldn’t have it. A two-out double from Haniger put him in scoring position and then Domingo Santana doubled him home. 2-0 M’s.

Gonzales was strong for the first five innings, but in the sixth he gave up two runs on a Michael Brantley two-run single. 2-2 in the sixth inning.

In the seventh inning, Aledmys Diaz gave the Astros their first lead of the day, 3-2, with a solo home run.

Houston and Seattle did not score the rest of the way. The Astros retired the Mariners final 19 batters.

The Astros win 3-2 to sweep the series.

Seattle couldn’t get any real offense going against Houston on Sunday. Mitch Haniger was responsible for half of the M’s hits AND he scored the two Seattle runs.

Haniger: 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 Runs scored, 1 K

Notes:

  • Mitch Haniger’s 1st inning home run gave Seattle 17 games to start a season with a home run. That continues the M’s franchise and MLB record for consecutive games with at least one HR to start a season.
  • The three-game losing streak is the longest stretch of losses for Seattle on the young season.
  • The loss Saturday gave Seattle their first series loss of the year. Today’s loss marks the first time the M’s have been swept this season.
